Her grand-daughter Nandini goes to Delhi for a job interview at a photo studio but is robbed along with her cellphone by thugs at gun point. She survives the robbery but cannot find her friend who had picked her up from the train station, she is taken in by Sunita Yadav (Alia Bhatt) along with her two children. After some time, Rohan (Vicky Kaushal) shows up at the woman's house in search of Nandini. He is surprised to find her under Sunita's care. After a series of comic incidents, they both become friends and start calling each other "Yaar" (lit. friend in Hindi). Rohan falls in love with Nandini but she does not express her feelings to him until then when she tells that she is interested in someone else. By then, Rohan becomes a famous photographer with his pictures published all over India after which he gets an opportunity to go abroad for a photo exhibition. Meanwhile, Rohan's father Gaurav is revealed. Nandini, after finding out about Rohan's job, tells her mother about him. To her surprise, she tells that he is already married to Charu (Sanya Malhotra), who had come to their house before the death of their parents. Nandini is angry at first but understands his situation and agrees to stay as friends. At this point, the film cuts back to the moment when Rohan and Nandini became friends and there's a parallel narrative of how they became so close and what led them to fall in love. Rohan and Nandini meet at a studio shoot where she is assisting him as a photographer's assistant. Rohan finds her attractive and tries to get close to her but Nandini rejects him. After some time, Nandini applies for a job at Rohan's company. Rohan finds her cute and starts to fall in love with her. While taking photos of the employees for an award ceremony, he finds out that she is his assistant. During the shooting, Nandini discovers that the one who tried to court her previously was Rohan. The two have a fight during which she slaps him but later apologize to each other.
